Sunday played host to the biggest, most fashionable event in Hollywood: the 88th Annual Academy Awards. The red carpet showcased the biggest names in the industry and while eyes are on the Star’s enviable style they are also ready to witness their unfortunate fashion faux pas.
Rooney Mara’s couture Givenchy gown by Riccardo Tisci caused a split in opinions on the red carpets, some people believed the whole look was destroyed by the ‘tacky’ white sandals. Personally we believe it’s her sexiest look to date, the simple cut out sections in the ivory dress complimented her figure while the harsh contrast of her dark lipstick and hair made for refreshing styling on the red carpet.
Mad Max star Charlize Theron also stunned in a red Christian Dior plunge gown with a long diamond necklace that breaks the open skin. The material clings in all the right places highlighting her subtle curves before falling into a delicate trail. The design is simple but you have to remember sometimes less is more.
One of the most phenomenal looks was actually spotted at the Vanity Fair after party where Diane Kruger was spotted solo wearing this sheer panel Reem Acra that was positively gorgeous! The ‘naked-dress’ is a trend that has been seen more and more on the red carpet with the likes of Beyonce and Kim Kardashian sporting the style at the Met Gala last year, the style is hard to remain any modesty but Kruger manages to ooze class.
Of course we couldn’t forget Jennifer Lawrence’s impeccable haute couture Christian Dior gown, the lingerie-inspired dress captured many eyes on the red carpet. The transition between the flesh coloured plunge neckline and the victorian-esque ruffles is topped off with the her freshly lightened locks. Lawrence stole the show once again, and this time it wasn’t for her clumsiness.
Emma Robert’s was eye catching at the Vanity Fair after party but not necessarily for a good reason, her Safiyaa ivory gown definitely gave us creepy vibes. While up close the couture dress was flattering on her slender figure we just couldn’t get over the black embellishments, it couldn’t just be us who saw spiders. Once it was seen as spiders we just couldn’t picture anything else!
Another odd look on the carpet was Lady Gaga’s strangely architectural structured jumpsuit, a co-creation of her stylist Brandon Maxwell. While this is one of her more tuned down red carpet looks it still appeared unflattering on her hips and made her body appear rather stoic.
It was such a shame to see Kate Winselt striding down the carpet in such a frumpy dress, the Ralph Lauren gown did nothing for her curvaceous body, critics have likened the dress to that of a slick bin bag. The material appeared cheap like PVC and it was a shame that it was so unflattering.
Another fashion flop came from Heidi Klum in her asymmetrical Marchesa gown. The lilac fairytale-esque dress looked like it had been stolen from a Disney film but on the carpet it was less than magical, the neckline was peculiar and while her model figure could pull it off it did seem rather uncomfortable. The baggy sleeve hinted at seventies inspiration but it just didn’t hit the mark at the awards.
